Getting The Garden Bulbs Thing Right For A Change
After a long winter there is nothing more lovely than a spring garden with decorative garden decor (glass gazing balls are a great addition). You want the beautiful spring bloom so here is what you need to do.
First things first…in the fall, plant your bulbs along with some ground phlox. You
should also put some bulb fertilizer in each hole as you plant the bulbs-and pay attention to
how far into the ground it is recommended that you go for planting. It is also a good idea to plant the bulbs in groups of 5 or 10
interspersed in such a way that other plants will hide their foliage as the bulbs start to
wither. If you go about willy-nilly style spreading them out here and there, they tend to make a pretty
home garden look like it doesen’t belong.
In the spring after your daffodils and tulips have all bloomed it is important to not cut
away the greenery. Considered unattractive by uneducated people this cutting away can only hinder the flower bulbs from
coming into full bloom the following year. Wait until it turns yellow and then it should pull out or cut off easily
enough. Truthfully, if you cann’t pluck it from the ground then it is not to try and cut
down and taken out. These left over leaves are generating food for next year’s blooms. All you have to do is
ignore them until they are truly wilted and yellow.
It is also a good idea to put down some bulb fertilizer in the fall and spring over the areas where you have them planted. This will help keep your bulbs happy from year to year. Daffodils are a good bulb choice as deer and squirrels seem fairly uninterested in them and
they slowly multiply year after year.
If you haven’t already noticed also, tulips can be a hear-breaker!
You could see that within a couple seasons your bulbs are halt blooming. Plus, the squirrels like to steal the bulbs and even the deer eat them … they simply stop appearing.
Words of Caution: Grape Hyacinth and also Scilla are both lovely BUT they could grow to a
point of becoming a nuisance in your landscape…and, as you can probably guess, you’ll want to keep this in thought when introducing them. Be sure to have some recycled glass gazing balls and other decorative garden decor too!
This is important: Spring gardens started in the FALL give the best results…just another reason why planning ahead is a big part of gardening.
