Through some online websites, one could learn any craft or new-found hobby. Don’t be afraid and give your “start herb garden plans right now. Here are some quick helpful tips to guide new gardeners.

Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the herb you want.

Go through reference books and online websites on herbs. These herbs are categorized according to use and purpose, flavors, and growth. Decide on what types of herbs you like. Pick the ones that fit your lifestyle, cooking preferences and space.

Step 2: Assess your space. Then know your soil.

The secret to a future blooming herb garden is picking the right spot. Pick between an indoor, or an outdoor garden, better if you do both. Take note of the herbs’ characteristics. And check if your soil is healthy enough to accommodate vegetation.

Step 3: Soil preparation.

The best way to prepare your soil is to till it regularly. However, you cannot overwork it, nor water too much. Check the consistency of the soil. Grab a handful and squeeze it. If it is too moist or sticky, it would be too solid and could not provide proper ventilation to growing baby roots. You could till for at least 3 days, at most 5 days consecutive.

Step 4: Choose your planting day.

This may be a shock, but the best day to plant is on a cool, cloudy day. However, there has to be no rain or drizzling. If it’s too sunny, you could crumple a couple of scrap papers and cover your herbs’ roots. The reason for this is that too much heat may diminish the intrinsic moisture in your herbs’ roots. Also, prepare a compost or peat moss, which uses would be explained in the next step.

Step 5: Planting proper.

Dig holes at least one inch wider and lower than the reach of the roots. This is to provide them with an early environment for growth. On the other hand, you still have to research about the proper depths for each herb you are planting.

In placing the herb plant in the hole, carefully fan out the roots, as if stretching them, but do not tug nor force the roots to be flat down in the ground. Fill in the holes but allot another inch in the surface where you will put the compost or peat moss. Either component would nourish the soil, thus making it nutritious for your herbs. Just regularly check if the peat moss has some growing roots. For the compost, meticulously check if the compost has no weeds growing in them. If so, carefully remove the moss or compost and replace with a new batch.

Step 6: Caring for the plants.

Before watering them, again take note of their characteristics. Some herbs like very moist surfaces; some prefer a little dry. Just check references for this matter.

If you are going to use seeds, just follow the same steps. However, you have to religiously observe them every day. Always de-weed and water the soil. The seeds need more water than baby plants with roots already.

After all these efforts, you could say, with full smile, “Start Herb Garden Project is now in full effect.”
